The dog days of summer are here! We wait for the warm weather for nine months, then all of a sudden we’re excited for the first pumpkin flavored coffee to show up far too early! I don’t know about you, but I find myself looking forward to the next job, next season, next vacation, without being fully present in the moment. I think it’s human nature, but that doesn’t mean we should be resigned to it. Let’s be sure to recharge ourselves this summer. Stop and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, the sound of the heat bugs, the free concerts under the stars. Because before you know it we’ll be chilly and wishing for the Spring! Why not enjoy it right now?
We had a great July program with Miss Sassy Mouth Marissa Balletti-Lavoie. Her Guide to the Hustle “Volume One” showed what imagination and action can do for a business. And I have a feeling she’ll be back with “Volume Two” someday.
Our Board is hard at work crafting a vision of PPARI that meets the needs of photographers today. There’s always room for additional volunteers to be part of the forward momentum. Interested in learning more about our Board? Please reach out to a Board member to chat. No obligation…just consider giving back, and getting so much in return.
So, please stop and take in all that summer in New England offers. And be in-the-moment so you can go back in your mind when we’re deep in polar fleece season :0)

Hello! By the time you read this HALF of 2019 will be behind us. They say the days go slow but the years go fast. I think the days go fast and the years faster! Where did you think you’d be by mid-2019? Did you create a roadmap to guide your way, or just hope you’d move ahead? “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible”. At Convention in March, Tim Cameron inspired me to pursue my Certified Professional Photographer’s designation. And the changes they’ve made to the program make it more straightforward than ever. I have to admit I haven’t signed up yet but I will have the CPP process underway in 2019.
With Convention in the rearview mirror, and understanding that PPARI exists to serve our members, our Board will be working on updating and clarifying our Mission and Vision this month. Next will be translating that into programs and features that best serve our existing members and attract new members. I welcome your emails and input right now, and throughout the process, about how we can improve the Association and therefore help you improve. I urge you to participate when we seek feedback.
In the meantime we have great speakers and programs planned for the next few months. Please join us. Each of us brings something special to the success of our Association and it’s not the same without you!
So, enjoy these months of sunny days, soft warm nights and rejuvenating time off. Get out and try something new, dust off those New Year’s Goals and take concrete steps to making them happen! I am excited for the day I can add CPP to my sign-off :0)

Marisa’s program “Sassy Mouth’s Guide to Hustle: Volume 1” provides attendees with an honest and relatable experience that brings them on the journey of her ever-growing business. Marisa openly shares her initial pitfalls and struggles that helped her learn and mold her business into something consumers are seeking out. Does it feel like New Years Day to anyone else? We’ve wrapped up our biggest event of the year, Convention #66, and I’m writing my first “Message” as President. Yup, a New Year, with all the wonderful possibilities that we can imagine!
Convention takes a year of planning, and three days to unwrap. We’ve already started brainstorming for next year. But first, a recap of 2019. Image Competition kicked off the weekend on Friday. Our acclaimed judges included Tim Cameron, Lynn Damon, Paula Swift and Don Raupp. All went smoothly (no trees down or power outages like last year) and there was so much to learn from the critiques of images.
Tim Cameron presented on the new look of the Certified Professional Photographer program & why it’s an impressive credential when the competition is leaning in with cheap pricing and you need to prove your value. He convinced me that 2019 is the year to jump in. Who’s with me? Jamie Palmer began our Free Programming Day on Saturday laying out a road map for creating social media content thirty days at a time! Sort of like those meal prep container sets that allow you to eat all week on one afternoon’s effort. You can follow her online at Outlier Marketing Group. Saturday afternoon we learned from Paula Swift how to capture engaging, lively, enduring images of children that their families will treasure. She shared the skills honed as a newspaper photographer that translated well to family photography. On Sunday, Tracie Maglosky revealed her secrets for living a well balanced life. Healthy business with boundaries, and healthy personal life enjoying the fruits of your labor!
Of course we’d never be able to pull this off without the support of vendors. I’d like to thank these businesses from the bottom of my heart, because they experience the same challenges and economic shifts that we do and still come through for us: Hunts Photo & Video, Printmakers, Inc., ACI Labs, Olympus, Miller’s Professional Imaging & White House Custom Color. In addition we had many industry-related businesses who donated gift certificates and products that give us a chance to try something new. PLEASE be sure to let these vendors know how much you appreciate their support next time you place an order or redeem a gift certificate!
I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered their time in planning and executing Convention. And we are grateful to our members and their guests who chose learning over other activities on March 1st, 2nd & 3rd. As Board Members we are here to serve our members and provide valuable education, networking and resources that exceed those you could find on your own. We all benefit when membership is growing and we’re seeing new faces. Please be an Ambassador for PPARI and invite photographers you meet, especially those who are starting out, and pay forward the gifts of knowledge & friendship you’ve received over the years!
I am excited to continue working with the other generous souls on our Board as we strive to serve our membership and industry every day!

Hunt’s Photo Walks & Workshops
Hunt’s Photo Walks are hands-on workshops that immerse the student in different aspects of photography, both technically and aesthetically. There is no better way to learn photography than through a hands-on experience, and these walks provide you with that opportunity. Our instructors will also give guided help to skill levels from beginner to advanced. Here are just a few that are being offered, visit http://edu.huntsphoto.com/photo-walks/ for a complete listing.
Saturday May 18th, Stevens-Coolidge Place, North Andover and Hunt’s Photo, Melrose 8am-5pm. The first step to creating a great print is by understanding how to create a great photograph in the field.
Sat May 18th, 9am-6pm • Hunt’s Photo, Melrose. Everyone has natural light available, but not necessarily the understanding of how to find and manipulate it with reflectors and diffusers to create the most pleasing or effective image.
Saturday, May 4th • 1-8:30pm, Hunt’s Photo, Melrose & Fan Pier, Boston. This unique workshop will be half classroom description, half in-field workshop, as we discuss filters and then put them to excellent use!
Saturday, May 4th, 3-8pm • Galilee, Narragansett, RI. The Port of Galilee is a fascinating, weathered and textured area for photography. We will begin the walk photographing in and around the port, then move toward the Point Judith Lighthouse for sunset.
Friday, April 12th, 5:00-9:00pm • Boston, MA. Join Hunt’s Photo Education for a night photography adventure in Boston’s burgeoning South Boston Waterfront.
